Here at St Dominic’s, we are committed to developing each child’s individual potential. For us that doesn’t just mean the academic features of school life. Our pupils are involved in a host of extra-curricular activities, from sport to green schools and many more.

Gaelic games | Cluichí Gaelach

St Dominic’s has a proud GAA tradition and we field teams in both girls’ and boy’s Gaelic football, hurling and camogie. We are very proud of our school pitch which was developed by the staff and local community some years ago. Our teams are open to all pupils and have achieved success in Croke Park in recent years. We have a special link with Thomas Davis GAA club and their coaches are involved in working with our pupils from a young age.

In 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 we received a very special guest – one Sam Maguire – in our school hall, accompanied by members of the All-Ireland winning Dublin side. Perhaps some of our current pupils will bring back Sam or Liam in the years to come! Mr Vaughan, Ms Hogan, Mr Looney, Mr Keating, Mr Donnellan and Mr Fagan are all involved in coaching our GAA teams.

Soccer | Sacar

St Dominic’s is in a football heartland in Tallaght and many of our pupils line out with local sides. We field a mixed eleven-a-side team, open to pupils from 4th to 6th Class, as well as both boys’ and girls’ five-a-side teams. Our girls’ team won the Dublin A 5-a-side tournament in 2012, while our eleven-a-side team enjoyed a great first year, winning five out of eight games. In 2018, we fielded our first-ever girls’ eleven-a-side team. Our soccer coaches are Mr Looney, Mr Donnellan, Ms McHugh, Ms O’Reilly and Ms Brennan.

Athletics | Lúthcleasa

Our pupils compete in the Cumann na mBunscol Athletics championships in Santry each year. In recent years our team has brought home medals of all colours in both individual and relay events. Ms Considine and Ms McHugh coach our athletics team.

Basketball | Cispeil

Our school features both an indoor basketball court in our Hall, and an outdoor court on the yard. Our Basketball teams are open to both girls and boys and have won a number of local tournaments in recent years.

Green Schools | Scoileanna Ghlas

We are very proud to have received three green flags to date for recycling, energy use and water conservation – and we are working on receiving a fourth for travel! Our pupils are involved in recycling and composting, as well as energy and water conservation. We are now focusing on walking and cycling to school, and our “Walk on Wednesday” and “Walking Bus” initiatives have been very successful to date. Our school garden is home to vegetable and flower beds for each class. Our Green School Committee is headed by Ms Brady.

Drama and Music | Ceol agus Drámaíocht

Our School Hall has been the venue for many successful concerts and plays over the years. In recent times, our classes have entertained with concerts at Christmas and during Seachtain na Gaeilge, while the “Dominic’s Got Talent” show is always great fun! We have also held musicals such as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Oliver,” giving the stars of tomorrow a chance to shine!

Other Activities | Gníomhaí Breise

Our cookery room is a wonderful resource for baking and cooking all year round. Our computer room also allows the girls and boys to play games, practice their work, or use the Internet for research. As well as our own excellent school library, we have a great link with the County Library, Tallaght for storytelling, drama, science and reading activities, amongst others. St Dominic’s competes each year in the Credit Union Table Quiz and many art, poetry and creative competitions. In 2011, for example, our school finished as National Runners-Up in the “Show Racism the Red Card” Creative Competition.
