Friendship and anti-bullying in 5th Class

Ms Tighe’s fifth class have begun reading Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. The novel centres on Auggie Pullman, a boy born with a severe facial difference who is starting in the 5th grade, having been previously home-schooled. Auggie wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid – but his classmates can’t get past his extraordinary face.

This thought-provoking novel challenges the reader to wonder about the true nature of empathy, compassion, acceptance, friendship, and—ultimately—kindness. Auggie proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.

In conjunction with the novel we have started a class kindness jar. When someone undertakes an act of kindness the recipient puts a marble in the jar. When the jar is full we hope to have a popcorn party and watch the movie of Wonder.
